READING PASSAGE (GENERAL TRAINING MODULE)
ST. MICHAEL'S SCHOOL FOR THE DIFFERENTLY ABLED
A Special Place for Special People
Welcome to St. Michael's. It is important to realise that not all students enrolled in our college have the same advantages. This is because our college is a special institution catering for students with individual physical challenges. We love and care for all our students equally, but some of you require more assistance than others.
You will already have been assigned your house, and so your House Co-ordinator is the person you should go to for assistance when necessary. However, self-reliance is key and we ask that you remember this at all times.
Able to Do Great Things
You have probably already noticed that we do not use the word "disabled" to refer to our students – it is most unfair to label any student this way especially when each one of us has abilities that students in other schools will never acquire! How many so-called "able" students can write with their feet or mouth? How many can get to the top of a set of steps in a wheelchair? No, we must always think of ourselves in positive terms so that we can achieve positive outcomes. We are all capable of doing extraordinary things and achieving greatness.
Guidelines
All colleges have rules and we are no exception. General good behaviour and consideration of others is expected of everyone and that includes all staff members. But at St Michael's we have certain guidelines that other schools do not need. I am referring to those requirements that help ensure we do not misunderstand each other and miss out on fulfilling our potential. A few of these guidelines are listed below.
Classes:
If you cannot attend class for any reason – physical or otherwise – you must inform your co-ordinator who will pass this information on to your class teacher.
If you need to leave a class for any reason, you need not discuss the reason with the teacher at the time, but you must later complete a form detailing the reason for your being excused.
Those of you who do not attend class in person but by video link must also make sure the teachers know if you cannot tune in to the lesson.
Meals:
It is your responsibility to let the kitchen know of any changes your doctor says you will be needing to your dietary menu.
Although many of you have special meal requirements and at all times you have the right to eat alone in your own room, we encourage you to make the effort to visit the canteen for meals as often as possible.
Sports:
As you know we are very proud of our sporting achievements at St. Michael's. Two of our ex-students have won medals at the Para-olympics. But is not just winning that we are proud of – participation and effort are just as important as medals. We strongly encourage you to become involved in sport at St. Michael's. Note that the same guidelines apply to your sports classes as to your regular classes.
If you cannot partake physically at sport, you can still take sport as a subject thanks to the latest Wi-Fi technology linked to our computer lab. You can actually play sports with other students at the college who do not play on the field.
Welcome Ceremony
Unless you have special permission not to attend today's Welcome Ceremony, we expect you to be there in Gabriel Hall at 2.p.m. this afternoon sharp. We cannot start without you so please do not be late for this your first assembly. Your places have all been reserved and the introduction to your teachers is always a rewarding experience. These wonderful people have been hand-picked for their skills with the differently abled, and, as you will soon find out, a good number of them are just like you!
After the ceremony, which includes a film about the college's beginnings and past and recent history, we will be able to meet each other in person and get to know each other for the first time. It is at these informal sessions that the bonds of life-long friendships are often forged. So be willing to mix and mingle!
Day One
Today being Sunday, the first day of the new semester begins tomorrow at 9.00 a.m. Don't forget to bring the appropriate textbook to class. Check this with the timetable for your House, since not all of you will be studying the same subject at the same time.

Wheels House – Mr. Collins Room 532
Springs House – Sister Fazackerly Room 239
Leadlight House – Mrs. Da Costa Room 532

Re: Type d'exercice pour le test IELTS
SPEAKING INTERVIEW
THREE PART FORMAT
Part 1
You are asked various questions about your background so that the examiner can discover who you are, where you come from, what you have been doing etc.
REMEMBER TO ANSWER PART 1 QUESTIONS IN SOME DETAIL because the examiner is unable to ask questions that are not on his or her "frame" or question list. That is, you cannot expect the examiner to "assist" you to answer well – that is your task: to give full answers to the prompts given.
You will probably be asked basic questions similar to those below about the topics shown:
For practice, prepare short (but not too short!) answers to the questions that follow...
Your background:
1. Where do you come from?
2. Where do you live now (house/flat/neighbourhood/area)?
3. What is your hometown well-known for?
4. Why did you choose to come to this country (if studying overseas)?
5. What are you involved in doing at the moment?
Your family:
1. How many members are there in your immediate family?
2. Do you have any brothers or sisters?
2. What are they doing at present?
3. Where does your father or mother work?
4. Do you live with your family? Why?
5. What do you and your family do together?
Your job or your schooling:
1. Do you have a full-time or part-time job at the moment?
2. Have you ever had a job before? If so, doing what?
3. Why did you choose the job you have (or had)?
4. Did you enjoy studying at your school? What interested you?
5. Who do you study or work with (your classmates or colleagues)?
Your interests:
1. Do you have any interesting hobbies or pastimes?
2. What do you enjoy doing on the weekend?
3. How do you improve your English after school hours?
4. Have you travelled to any interesting places recently?
5. If you had lots of money, what would you like to do?
Part 2
In Part 2 of the Speaking Test interview you are required to give a short talk (1–2 minutes only) on a topic given to you by the examiner. You should not find it difficult to talk about the topic given to you because:
a) The topic is within your understanding – it is concerned with something you do or should know something about
b) The card you are given contains at least 3 suggestions of things to talk about regarding the topic.
REMEMBER YOU ARE ASKED TO SPEAK FOR 1–2 MINUTES.
A typical card is as follows:
Talk about your English teacher (either your present teacher or a teacher you have had in the past)
–
describe your teacher
– what is his or her teaching method?
– why do you like/dislike him or her?
and how has he/she helped you with your language-learning?
(Expect to answer at least one or two follow-up questions about the talk you just gave.)
Part 3
In Part 3 of the Speaking Test interview you are required to talk in detail about a wider topic area than in Part 2. However, there is a link between the topic given in Part 2 and what you are asked to talk about in Part 3.
For example, if you are asked to talk about your teacher in Part 2, then the wider topic area in Part 3 will probably be concerned with education in general.
Education in general:
1. How important do you think education is for a child these days?
2. Has your education been useful for you? Why do you think so?
3. Do you think that present day schooling is an improvement on the past? In what way?
4. Are there ways in which schools could be improved?
5. Why do you think governments do not usually allow parents to educate their children at home?
6. Is it important to study hard when you are young or can you enjoy your life and return to study when you are grown-up?
7. What are the advantages and disadvantages of studying when you are...
a) young b) mature
8. Should governments spend more on education than they do at present?
9. Are teachers paid enough?
10. Would you force your children to study a particular subject (or subjects) or would you allow them to choose their own profession?
Please note that you can be asked any number of questions during the 11–14 minute
test period, and not necessarily the number of questions given above.
